The Offensive Exploitation of the Masai
To the Editor:
Last month's Vogue magazine with Keira Knightley on the cover and shot in Africa offended me so much that I wrote to Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue, and to Oprah Winfrey. When will the fashion exploitation of the "brave Masai" stop?
Ms. Knightley being photographed wearing Hermes and Ralph Lauren while helping young Masai girls herd sheep is ridiculous and demeaning to an amazing people. I stated in my letter to Ms. Wintour that I had written a similar missive to Gentlemens Quarterly in 1980. It is a shame that this practice still exists and it must be stopped!
I googled "Masai" and "fashion" and your very informative piece popped up. Thank you for expressing my sentiments so well. I hope Ms. Winfrey, with her concerns for Africa, will pick up the ball and do a show on this ridiculous practice.
