In 1921, Gertrude Bell drew the boundaries of the country we now know as Iraq. She intentionally combined three Ottoman provinces into an Arab state too weak to be independent of Britain, and laid down policies for the state that were later taken up by the Saddam Hussein’s Baathist socialist party.
