The Trump Transport: How Hispanics Will Be Delivered to Their Final Destinations
I recently read an article in The New York Times about the initial deportation of Jews in Vienna to assorted ghettoes.
One survivor described her journey, heartbreakingly explaining that “The Viennese were standing and laughing. ‘Finally, they got the Jews out.’ ”
Now I am not suggesting that the horrific deportation of Jews, first to ghettoes, then to death camps, is anything close to the Hispanic “situation.”
But I can’t help but fast forward to the logistics of a Hispanic Trump Transport. And I am painfully aware that many Americans will witness their involuntary journey, and some may even express joy.
In Europe, before 1942, most citizens never actually witnessed the mass murder of the Jews. But many certainly watched the Jews being marched to train stations. They stood by while Jews were crammed into train cars, with their loved ones and suitcases held close to them.
Is this what the Trump Transport will look like?
Back in November 2015, Donald Trump told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” co-host, Mika Brzezinski that he would build a “Deportation Force” to remove 11 million undocumented immigrants. He has also proposed ending birthright citizenship which is included in the Constitution and grants automatic citizenship to anyone born in the U.S.
I can’t stop imagining hundreds of Hispanics lining up for a forced deportation, their loved ones hugging them and crying, and bidding them a final goodbye. I see unsettling visions in my mind, of endless lines of humiliated and degraded human beings: many of them elderly, or sick, or children.
And in my dark thoughts, I always see them in the winter, in the cold, in the rain. Although I would hope that the Trump Transport would take place in summer and only on sunny days, and weather permitting, I doubt that will be the case.
And when the Hispanics get “dropped off,” what then? I doubt there will be parades and welcome wagons set up for their ultimate destinations.
And I imagine there will be countless who don’t survive. We will bear witness to chilling images in the press of the last journey for many.
Is this who we are?
If Trump loves Hispanics as he recently stated on Twitter, I am looking forward to hearing in detail the logistics of his Trump Transport.
Let’s hope the American people demand to hear about his “solution” before Election Day.
