The Senior Writer will identify, develop, write, edit and publish a wide range of articles and materials including original articles for local and national newspapers, magazines, and the web; news releases; brochures and pamphlets; guidebooks; annual reports; reference works; speeches; and scripts. The work requires the acquisition of information on a variety of subjects, usually medical and health care-related topics, in the course of completing assignments. The Senior Writer will develop, analyze, and select appropriate information and presentation of the information in a form and at a level suitable for a very broad and far reaching audience. The Senior Writer will communicate information for purposes such as articulating policy; making public reports on the activities and plans of Texas Medical Center; reporting the results of research and investigations; and educating and changing perceptions of key stakeholders, government officials, the media, and the public on health care innovations, developments, and breakthroughs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Gathers information for assignments typically by studying related literature, interviewing experts either in person, on the telephone, or via email, and observing activities, processes, demonstrations, events, and experiments.
2. Analyzes, selects, and organizes the pertinent information. Determines the most logical and effective sequence of the narrative, the overall length, and tone based on the objectives, the medium, and the audience.
3. Takes into consideration the communication goals of the piece which may include publication in local and/or national media outlets, the medium and periodical style
requirements, and consistency with other information presented by Texas Medical Center to write the material using accepted style guides.
4. Edits the text for clarity and accuracy; consults on or selects illustrative material; obtains necessary approvals; and prepares the material for publication.
5. Uses desktop publishing hardware and software to draft, write, edit, and lay out the material and to design, print, and distribute it.
6. Writes materials with the goal to change/educate perceptions, beliefs, and ideas.
7. Verifies the factual content of written work.
8. Idea and story development will be an important key function.
This is a FULL TIME, FULLY BENEFITED POSITION!

Key Requirements:
1. Degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field.
2. 5+ years of relevant experience writing and editing in a professional media environment and producing written materials for news media.
3. Organized, task-oriented, proactive, and deadline-driven.
4. Knowledge of Associate Press Style Guide and libel laws in Texas.
5. Ability to assess the needs of a target audience and tailor content accordingly (length, level of detail, technical content, formality of tone, etc.).
6. Knowledge of medical terminology, research, clinical care, delivery, and policy A STRONG PLUS!
