Sactown magazine is the Sacramento region's largest magazine and was founded by editors who are veterans of Money magazine, InStyle, New York magazine, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. The magazine is searching for a talented designer with a strong work ethic and experience in print publication design, preferably with at least some experience in web design.
While full-time is preferred, a part-time position may be considered since Sactown is currently a bimonthly magazine.
The ideal candidate will be organized, detail-oriented, able to multitask and work well under pressure, and be willing to put in additional hours on deadline.
The candidate must be extremely proficient with the Mac OS system, as well as Adobe InDesign CS, Photoshop and Illustrator. Familiarity with Adobe InCopy is preferred. The ideal candidate will also have excellent production skills such as color correcting, pre-flighting, press check experience, etc.
The candidate will work closely with and report directly to the owners/editors-in-chief, who are also currently the primary photo editors for the magazine.
Main duties will include laying out the bimonthly magazine (with plans to go monthly), designing features and departments, and maintaining and updating the design and functionality of the magazine's new website: www.SactownMag.com
Secondary duties will include occasional ad design and the design of miscellaneous marketing materials ranging from advertising media kits to sales collateral material and more.

About Sacramento: California's capital city has a metro population of 2.2 million and is located one hour from Napa, 90 minutes from San Francisco, 2 hours from Lake Tahoe and 3 hours from Monterey.
About Our Company Sactown is a bimonthly magazine located in downtown Sacramento. Its owners and editors-in-chief have a combined 20 years of national magazine and newspaper experience with the aforementioned publications and others. The publisher of the magazine is the former president of Texas Monthly, one of the largest regional magazines in America. Our senior photographer shoots regularly for The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.
Since the magazine's launch in 2006, Sactown has won numerous regional and national awards, including a dozen Maggie Awards from the Western Publications Association for writing, design and photography, including the Maggie Award for Best City & Metropolitan Magazine. It has also won two Folio Awards and two City & Regional Magazine Awards. In addition, its photographs have been selected twice for the Communications Arts Photography Annual.
This position is a chance for a talented designer to work on a local level with a team filled with national magazine veterans who are aspire to compete with the best city magazines in America. For the right person, this might also be a part-time position, allowing you to maintain a freelance career when not working on the magazine.
Experience in publication design (magazine or alt-weekly) is required, preferably in consumer publications.
