The Senior Director, Retail and Digital Publishing, Graduate & Pre-College Programs is accountable for the overall success of the business unit’s portfolio of more than 100 print and e-titles. In addition, the Senior Director of Publishing works closely with the Product, Marketing, and Production teams within the business unit and the company-wide Publishing Center of Excellence. The position reports to the Vice President of Product Strategy and Development and works closely with Kaplan Publishing’s President & Publisher.
The ideal candidate is or has:
- A highly skilled manager with experience working closely with cross-functional teams in editorial, education, publishing, or related environments
- A background that includes experience in multi-format product development
- Knowledgeable about new platforms, formats, content delivery options, and changing consumer preferences
- Comfortable in a matrix work environment and collaborative by nature
- A strong results orientation
- Strong analytic skills and proven ability to leverage market data to identify new product opportunities and improve existing products
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement long- and short-term product development strategies
Job Responsibilities
Increase sales for a portfolio of more than 100 print and digital titles:
- Prune poor performers
- Create long- and short-term product development plans for key test markets
- Work closely with Marketing and Sales teams to identify opportunities for promotion, co-op advertising and partnerships
Spearhead new initiatives to grow print and digital revenue:
- Work closely with the Product Development and Marketing teams to develop research-based market projections for existing and new program offerings.
- Define product feature sets, including print, online, media (e.g., DVD), and mobile assets
- Ensure program alignment/consistency, including titling and series fit
- Manage product and overall program P&L
- Hone digital product strategy
Work closely with the Content Development team to ensure the products created:
- Are delivered on schedule and on budget, and meet all requirements
- Are of industry-best quality and are instructionally sound
- Represent the Graduate & Pre-College publishing business to senior management, in sales force meetings, and at trade and conference events
- Create and track sales goals and forecasts
- Research, monitor, analyze, and provide expertise on the competitive landscape
- Manage inventory to ensure maximum sales and minimal inventory write off expense
- Collaborate with managing editor to ensure accurate and complete title information in business systems

Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum of 8 years experience in publishing, test prep, education, or related field
- Demonstrated ability to establish objectives, meet deadlines, and produce exceptional deliverables
- Ability to work collaboratively on complex projects
- Highly organized and attentive to details
- Demonstrated ability to work on and lead cross-functional teams
- Excellent written and oral communication and executive presentation skills
- Accounting or financial analysis experience a plus
- Experience with Agile product development preferred
