Job Overview:
The design director will guide with enthusiasm every visual aspect of the magazine’s brand, from print to digital. She or he will not only lead and collaborate with an art director and staff photographer but will work closely with the editor to create an ambitious, lively magazine that inspires and succeeds commercially. We are not looking for a passive designer, who merely outputs what’s requested; instead we welcome a designer who will constructively push each element to be the best it can be, both visually and editorially, from awe-inducing feature spreads to cleverly executed service packages spanning a dozen pages or more. We need someone who will bring new, creative ideas to the table—and inspire others to do the same.
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Collaborating with the editor and Emmis editorial director to conceptualize and execute inventive and commercial magazine covers
• Managing and organizing the responsibilities and schedules of the art director and staff photographer, and directing photo shoots as needed.
• Developing relationships with and clearly communicating assignments to a rich slate of contributing photographers, illustrators, and graphic artists
• Encouraging and challenging editors to approach ideas graphically when appropriate, from format-breaking features to unconventional front-of-book minutiae.
• Actively engaging in idea meetings, from monthly lineups to long-range planning to heads and decks
• Leading a redesign of the magazine

EXPERIENCE:
Successful candidates will possess the following skills/abilities:
• Proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator CS5
• A collaborative, enthusiastic spirit determined to create ambitious, groundbreaking work and to stay atop (and ahead of) design trends
