Refugees
Double Standard
Is there a double standard when it comes to supporting refugees? Many Africans are asking that after comparing the aid to Kosovar refugees with the assistance given to displaced Africans. Sadako Ogata, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, said during a recent tour of Africa that the plight of Kosovo's ethnic Albanians has indeed diverted attention, if not necessarily resources, from some 5.3 million Africans made homeless because of war.
According to United Nations figures quoted by Alex Duval Smith in London's centrist Independent, $1.60 a day has been spent on a Kosovar refugee-15 times the 11 cents going to an African.
